A Return to Normal Life in Mogadishu
A street vendor and his wares at Hamar Weyne Market in the Somali capital Mogadishu. The 6th of August marks two years since the militant group Al-Shabaab withdrew from Mogadishu following sustained operations to retake the city by the Somali National Army (SNA) backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops. Since the group's departure the country's capital has re-established itself and a sense of normality has returned. Buildings and infrastructure devastated and destroyed by two decades of conflict have been repaired; thousands of Somalis have returned from abroad to invest and help rebuild their nation; and foreign embassies and diplomatic missions have reopened.
