International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade Celebrated Through Music

The United Nations celebrates the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade with music, dance and video. With the theme "Forever Free: Celebrating Emancipation," the event featured performers of jazz, rock and roll, hip-hop and reggae from Africa, the Caribbean and the United States.
"Not only did they [the victims of the transatlantic slavery] survive the slave masters' attempts to destroy identity, heritage and a sense of home – they defined the music of a culture and ultimately a nation."" addressed the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, additionally stating, "without Africa's sons and daughters there would be no jazz, no rock 'n roll, no hip hop."
