Humanitarian Situation in El Sereif

Mubarak Abdulkarim Hassa, a lab assistant, is pictured in the laboratory at El Sereif hospital, North Darfur. The hospital had been in disuse until it reopened in January to accommodate displaced civilians from the tribal conflicts over gold mines in the Darfur region. Under-resourced, one doctor attends nearly 300 patients daily with serious health problems including hepatitis, malaria, chest infections, malnutrition, and premature deliveries.
