Swearing-in Ceremony for New ICJ Judge

Judge Dalveer Bhandari (India) becomes a new Member of the ICJ by making the solemn declaration provided for in Article 20 of the Statute of the Court. It should be noted that, owing to the renovation of the Great Hall of Justice of the Peace Palace, where the Court usually sits, this public sitting was held in the auditorium of the Hague Academy of International Law, whose building is adjacent to the Peace Palace. Dalveer Bhandari was elected Member of the Court by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations on 27 April 2012, following the resignation of Mr. Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh (Jordan), former judge and Vice-President of the Court. Mr. Bhandari will hold office for the remainder of Judge Al-Khasawneh's term, which will expire on 5 February 2018.
The Court's role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States (its Judgments are final and binding) and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized UN organs and agencies. Nouveau membre de la CIJ, Dalveer Bhandari (Inde) prête serment comme prévu à l'article 20 du Statut de la Cour. En raison de la rénovation de la grande salle de justice du Palais de la Paix, où siège normalement la Cour, cette séance a exceptionnellement eu lieu dans l'auditorium de l'Académie de droit international de La Haye, dont le bâtiment jouxte le Palais. Dalveer Bhandari a été élu membre de la Cour le 27 avril 2012, suite à la démission du juge Al-Khasawneh (Jordanie).
