Secretary-General Visits the Philippines Addresses UNCTAD V
Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim arrived in Manila on 6 May for a three-day official visit to the Philippines. On 7 May he addressed the inaugural ceremony of the fifth session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Earlier in the day, the Secretary-General was guest of honor at a luncheon given by Arturo Tanco, Minister of Agriculture of the Philippines, and President of the World Food Council. In the evening, the Secretary-General and Mrs. Waldheim attended a state dinner given by President Marcos and Mrs. Marcos in their honor. On 8 May the Secretary-General held talks with President Ferdinand Marcos at Malacañang. He also conferred with Foreign Minister Romulo, and addressed UN Staff in Manila at the headquarters of UNDP.
