Special Committee Against Apartheid Observes Solidarity Day with Struggle of Women in South Africa and Namibia
The Special Committee Against Apartheid met in solemn observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the struggle of women in South Africa and Namibia. The International Day was proclaimed by the General Assembly in 1981 to commemorate a demonstration held on 9 August 1956 in Pretoria, South Africa, to protest the extension of pass laws to African women. The meeting heard nine speakers this morning including the Committee's Acting Chairman, Serge Elie Charles, Permanent Representative of Haiti, and by representatives of Nigeria, Nepal, Ukraine and Peru.
