Security Council Recommends Republic of the Congo for UN Membership

The Security Council this afternoon unanimously recommended to the General Assembly that the Republic of the Congo be admitted to membership in the United Nations. The vote was taken on a draft resolution introduced by Tunisia. The Republic of the Congo is the sixth newly independent African state to be recommended for admission to the United Nations this year.
Seen here as they exchanged views in the Council chamber shortly before the meeting got under way are U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld (left) and Mr. Georgy P. Arkadev, UN Under-Secretary for Political and Security Council Affairs.
