Timor-Leste President and SRSG Celebrate 5 May Agreement
José Ramos-Horta (top right), President of Timor-Leste, today inaugurated the Garden of 5 May in Dili, commemorating the historic 5 May 1999 Agreement which led to the establishment of the first UN mission in Timor-Leste, UNAMET, and the Popular Consultation on 30 August 1999. Opening the garden in what until recently was a camp for displaced persons, the President honoured the people of Timor-Leste and Indonesia who had worked for democratic change in their country, and the UN.
