Eleventh Special Session of the General Assembly on International Economic Co-operation

The General Assembly began its eleventh special session on international economic co-operation on the morning of 25 August. The special Assembly session has been called to assess progress made in the establishment of the new international economic order and to take appropriate action for the promotion of the development of developing countries and international economic co-operation. Adoption of a new international development strategy for the 1980s, and the launching of a new round of global economic negotiations are the tasks confronting the special session. Opening statements were made by the President of the Assembly, Salim A. Salim, (United Republic of Tanzania), and Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. Zimbabwe was admitted as the 153rd Member State of the United Nations.
