Secretary-General Pays Official Visit to China

Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim arrived in Peking on 29 April for a three-day visit to the People's Republic of China. He was welcomed at the airport by the Chinese Foreign Minister Huang Hua and representatives of the Chinese Government. In the evening Foreign Minister Huang Hua and Mrs. Huang Hua gave a banquet in honor of the Secretary-General and Mrs. Waldheim at the Great Hall of the People in Peking. On the second day of his official visit, the Secretary-General had five hours of talk with the Chinese Foreign Minister in the Great Hall of the People in Peking. He also attended a special performance of song and dance by Chinese groups representing all nationalities of the country. On the third day he had talks with Chinese Premier Hua Guofeng and Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping. Earlier on the third day the Secretary-General toured various scenic attractions near Peking. In the evening he attended a special performance of the Peking opera in the Great Hall of the People.
