General Assembly Continues Debate on Responsibility to Protect

Kodjo Menan (left), Permanent Representative of Togo to the United Nations and Vice-President of the General Assembly, chairs the Assembly's continued debate on the concept of the responsibility to protect.
At the 2005 World Summit, Heads of State and Government declared that each state had the responsibility to protect its citizens from mass atrocities, and that the international community had the responsibility to assist in such protection. The Summit declaration also called on the General Assembly to continue consideration of this concept. The Assembly had before it the Secretary-General's report on ""Implementing the Responsibility to Protect"".
