Venezuela: Development of the Guayana Region
In recent years, Venezuela has had one the world's highest and most sustained economic growth rates as well as one the highest rates of demographic expansion. As part of the country's overall economic plan, the Government is giving top priority, through the Corporation Venezolana de Guayana (CVG), to the development of the Guayana region in the north, in order to foster industrialization and diversify the economy, to create new exports, to increase employment, and to decentralize the present concentration of economic activities. The United Nations and several of its related agencies are assisting in this programme. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) is helping to finance the construction of the Guri hydroelectric project on the Caroni River. The site will consist of a dam 106 meters high, a power plant with three 175,000-kilowatt generators, and a transmission line to supply electric power to the major industries in the area, which include a mining company, a petroleum company, a steel and an aluminum plant.
