Commemoration of Suai Church Massacre in Timor-Leste

Timorese stand outside Suai's church while a commemorative mass led by the Roman Catholic Bishops of Dili and Baucau, Alberto Ricardo da Silva and Basílio do Nascimento, takes place. The commemoration recalls the massacre of nearly 200 people inside the Suai church, perpetrated by pro-Indonesia militia following an August 1999 UN-led popular referendum granting Timor-Leste independence from Indonesia. Finn-Reske Nielsen, Deputy Special- Representative for the Secretary General for Governance Support, Development and Humanitarian Coordination for the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT), also attended the ceremony.
