General Assembly Opens Twenty-Fourth Session; Elects Miss Angie Brooks of Liberia as President

The United Nations General Assembly opened its twenty-fourth regular session this afternoon, electing Miss Angie E. Brooks of Liberia as its President. The seven Main Committees then met consecutively to elect their Chairmen.

A wide view of the General Assembly as the traditional moment of silence was observed before commencement of proceedings. On the rostrum, from left to right are: UN Secretary-General, U Thant; Alberto Fuentes Mohr, Minister of External Affairs of Guatemala, temporary President of the General Assembly; and Constantin A. Stavropoulos, Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly Affairs.
