WHO Promotes Better Health Standards
The World Health Organization (WHO) is helping more than 100 countries and territories to fight disease. In 1950, upon the request of the Turkish Government, WHO participated in the establishment of a demonstration and training centre, sending a fully-equipped team which worked in Istanbul for nearly two years. This team undertook the advanced training of some 450 doctors and 500 nurses, vaccinated more than 10,000 children with BCG, and conducted radiography examination of 60,000 persons. Today, the Istanbul Demonstration and Advanced Study Centre, continues the work which WHO helped to initiate. Training, is available at this Centre for health workers in the European and Eastern Mediterranean regions.
