London Symphony Orchestra Plays at United Nations Day Concert

The nineteenth anniversary of the United Nations was marked today at Headquarters in New York by a symphony concert in the General Assembly Hall. The London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Georg Solti, was heard in music by Sir Arthur Bliss, Benjamin Britten and Bella Bartok; Isaac Stern was the soloist in the First Violin Concerto by max Bruch. An address on the occasion was made by Secretary-General U Thant. Portions of this year's concert were transmitted to Europe to form part of an international two-hour radio programme, together with other contributions originating from special United Nations Day concerts taking place in Geneva, Paris and Prague. This international broadcast was heard simultaneously by listeners in a dozen European countries; other broadcasting organizations were to carry the programme later, by transcription. The United Nations Headquarters concert was also broadcast in the United States and Canada, and carried by shortwave to listeners in Latin America.
