The Institute for Rehabilitation in Sao Paulo, Brazil, represents a joint effort of the Medical Faculty of the University of Sao Paulo, the United Nations, the International Labour Organization and the World Health Organization to establish a centre for helping physically handicapped people to learn to use their limbs or artificial limbs as a means of training them for purposeful activities. The project first envisaged in 1951 became a reality in 1961 when the Institute was incorporated with the Orthopaedic and Traumatological Department in the Faculty of Medicine of the University.
