UN/FAO Fishing Development Project in the Philippines

UN/FAO Fishing Development Project in the Philippines

The supply of fish from domestic sources in the Philippines is not sufficient to meet the high demand in the country and large amounts of fish products are imported from various countries of the world. The existing fisheries are mostly in waters very close to the shore; many important stocks in off-shore areas are virtually unexploited. The United Nations Special Fund is assisting the Government in the development of deep sea fisheries through experimental fishing and training of fishermen. The project is being conducted over a period of five years and the executing agency is the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
