United Nations Special Commission Undertakes Inspections Aimed at Eliminating Iraq's Weapons of Mass Destruction

On 3 April 1991, the United Nations Security Council adopted a nine-part resolution which provided for a formal cease-fire of the Gulf War only after Iraq agreed to theprovisions of resolution 687 (1991). The Security Council created the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM), headed by Executive Chairman Rolf Ekeus (Sweden) to identify and destroy Iraq's nuclear, biological, chemical weapons and ballistic missile facilities.
An UNSCOM inspector checks an UNSCOM tag on a silkworm missile to ensure that it has not been tampered, either for cannibalization of vital parts or used for reverse engineering.
