Pakistani Paintings Formally Presented to United Nations

A gift from the government of Pakistan – three paintings by Chughtai, considered the most outstanding contemporary painter of that country – were presented to the United Nations today. They were presented by Professor Ahmed S. Bokhari, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the U.N., who expressed his pleasure at making the presentation, and accepted by Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold, who declared that it was good for the West to keep in close touch with the East and its basic fine culture, a contact which has been lost during the early history of Europe.
Here Messrs Hammarskjold (left) and Bokhari look at one of the paintings, which have been hung in the entrance to the Delegates' Dining Room.
