Mexican Foreign Minister Addresses U.N. 10th Anniversary Session
Dr. Luis Padilla Nervo, Minister for External Relations of Mexico and President of the U.N. General Assembly's 6th session, addressing a meeting of the UN 10th anniversary observance, at the San Francisco Opera House. Seated et the nostrum (left to right) are Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, Dr. Eelco N. van Kleffens, of the Netherlands, President of the last U.N. General Assembly, who presides over these commemorative meetings, and Mr. Andrew Cordier, Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General.
Mr. Padilla Nervo called for a solution of international disputes on the basis of negotiations and conciliations as provided in the UN charter. The Charter, he said, was the only practical and acceptable guide for all. Referring to the forthcoming meeting of the big four powers, he declared that it was "a most encouraging sign" in the international situation. He also called for cooperation among the big powers to refrain from using the veto in the case of admitting members into the UN, and stressed the moderating role the small countries could play-in smoothing international tensions.
