U.N. Secretary-General Leaves Beirut for New York

UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld and his party left Beirut for New York today after several days of discussions with Lebanese officials, and members and officials of the United Nations Observation Group in Lebanon (UNOGIL). The Secretary-General's visit to the Middle East followed the request of the third emergency special session of the General Assembly that he make, in consultation with the governments concerned, such ""practical arrangements"" as would adequately held uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter in relation to Lebanon and Jordan and ""thereby facilitate the early withdrawal of the foreign troops from the two countries.""
The Secretary-General is seen here, prior to leaving, with the members of the UNOGIL. Left to right: Mr. Galo Plaza (Ecuador), the Secretary-General, Mr. Rajeshwar Dayal (India), and Major General Odd Bull (Norway).
