U.N. Secretary-General Visits Indian Battalian of UNEF
U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, who arrived in Gaza on 23 December to spend Christmas with the troops of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF), today visited company headquarters and several of the observation posts along the Armistice Demarcation Line manned by units of the 2nd Battalion of the Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian UNEF contingent. Thanks to the generosity of the Indian troops, practically all members of the national contingents of UNEF who celebrate Christmas were able to take part in holiday festivities. The Indians volunteered to take over nearly all guard and patrol duties for 24 hours, as they did last year.
The Secretary-General's visit ended at a Platoon Camp in Deir El Ballah where he is photographed (2nd from left) as he watched a special wrestling exhibition put on for the occasion. The Grenadiers are famous for their skill at this sport.
