Geneva Conference on Nuclear Tests Problem Opens
The determination to work out a successful solution to the problem of discontinuing nuclear test explosions was expressed by the representatives of the three nuclear powers -- the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union -- as they opened negotiations on the subject at the Palais des Nations in Geneva today. The participants were welcomed to the conference by UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld's personal representative on disarmament matters, Mr. T.G. Narayanan.
In this photograph, taken shortly before the opening of the meeting, Mr. Narayanan (standing at left) can be seen behind the three Heads of Delegations (from the left): Mr. James Wadsworth (USA); Mr. S.K. Tsarapkin (USS); and Mr. David Ormsby-Gore (U.K.).
