Field Coverage
Rural Development in Afghanistan
The rural development programme in Afghanistan began as a pilot project in two villages in 1954. Subsequently, major projects in health and sanitation, handicrafts and cotton industries, agriculture, and education were initiated by the Government. With the assistance of the UN and its specialized agencies, the development area has been extended to about four hundred villages. In all projects undertaken, efforts are made to promote the development of local institutions, particularly the village development councils.
