UN High Commissioner on Refugees Briefs Security Council on Refugee Situation in West Africa

8 March 2001

The Security Council meets to hear a briefing by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Ruud Lubbers on the refugee situation in West Africa. He asked the Council to strengthen the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) by providing it with more troops and a revised mandate. Such action would enable refugees to return and held the key to the country's future.
