40 Speakers Participate in Counter-Terrorism Committee to Develop Long-Term Strategy to Defeat Terror

The Council's aim is to raise the average level of government performance against terrorism across the globe. This means upgrading the capacity of each nation's legislation and executive machinery to fight terrorism. Every government, therefore, is responsible for ensuring that there was no weak part of the chain.
Resolution 1373 (2001) is a wide-ranging and comprehensive resolution to combat international terrorism, which was unanimously adopted on 28 September in the wake of the 11 September terrorist attacks on the United States. A Council Committee was also established to monitor the resolution's implementation, and all States were called on to report on actions they had taken to that end no later than 90 days from the resolution's adoption date.]
Secretary-General Kofi Annan (right) this morning called on the Security Council Counter-terrorism Committee to develop a long-term strategy that would enable all States to undertake the hard steps needed to defeat terrorism. Mr. Annan was making the first address in a public Council meeting held today that heard over 40 interventions, including a briefing by the Chairman of the Committee, Jeremy Greenstock (United Kingdom).
