United Nations Day Concert Held at UN Headquarters
The 1971 United Nations Day Concert was held in the General Assembly Hall at UN Headquarters this afternoon. To mark the twenty-sixth anniversary of the Organization, Secretary-General U Thant commissioned a new composition by Spanish cellist and composer Pablo Casals, "Hymn to the United Nations", with a text by American poet W. H. Auden. The hymn was performed by the Orchestra of the Festival Casals, with the United Nations Singers and the Chorus of the Manhattan School of Music, under the direction of Maestro Pablo Casals.
Other works performed at the concert were: Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins by Bach; Dumbarton Oaks Concerto (1938) by Stravinsky; and Concerto in C Major for three Keyboard Instruments by Bach.
Distinguished artists who participated in the concert were: Isaac Stern; Alexander Schneider; Mieczyslaw Horszowski; Rudolph Serkin; and Eugene Istomin.
