The General Assembly voted tonight to recognize the representatives of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and ""to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations affiliated to it"". The Assembly acted by adopting a draft resolution, sponsored by Albania and 22 other nations, by a vote of 76 in favour to 35 against, with 17 abstentions.

The resolution was rejected by a roll-call vote of 55 in favour to 59 against, with 15 abstentions (see voting boards).
