Farming for Development: Resettlement Project in Afghanistan
For some time to come the poorer countries of the world will have to rely on agriculture to raise their living standards and supply the capital they need to create industries. Agricultural production must therefore be increased. This requires tractors, fertilizers, new and better seeds, vast irrigation schemes, land reforms.

The Government of Afghanistan has made substantial investments in the multipurpose development of the Helmand-Arghandab watershed which covers an area of about 120,000 hectares. The purpose of this Government project which has received help from the Food and Agriculture Organization under the UN Development Programme is to enlarge the irrigated areas, increase and modernize agricultural production, and to resettle a large number of nomads.
