Security Council Continues Debate on Situation in Occupied Arab Territories

The Security Council continued its debate this afternoon on the situation in the occupied Arab territories, having before it the report of its three-member Commission established under Resolution 446 (1979) "to examine the situation relating to settlements in the Arab territories occupied since 1967, including Jerusalem." Between 20 May and 1 June, the Commission - composed of Bolivia, Portugal, and Zambia - visited Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt. It met with Governments officials in those countries, as well as with officials of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Upon its return, the Commission has made a number of recommendations in its report to the Security Council concerning its findings in the Middle East. Debating these recommendations and the situation in the occupied Arab territories today were the representatives of Kuwait, France, China, Syria, and Jordan and the Acting Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
