United Nations Agencies Assist Afghani Refugees
Since 1979 when fighting broke out in their country, over three million Afghans have fled into neighboring Pakistan to escape the hostilities. To help the refugees, the United Nations quickly mobilized several of its agencies to provide food, shelter, health care, education, vocational training, and technical assistance. Cooperating in this effort are the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Bank.
