Cultural Heritage and Development

An Indian woman of the Salaseca tribe washing wool. Ambato, south of Quito.

Along with the other Andean Pact Governments, Ecuador initiated in the mid-1970s a regional "Cultural Heritage and Development" project in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Through this project, people learn from their collective past: not only monuments and sites are preserved but also oral traditions, indigenous technologies and local skills of all types are enhanced to maintain cultural values which could be eroded from uncontrolled social and economic progress.
