Special Committee against Apartheid Observes Day of Solidarity with South African Political Prisoners
The Special Committee against Apartheid observes the Day of Solidarity with South African Political Prisoners. The Day marks the anniversary of the adoption of a General Assembly resolution in 1963, calling on the South African regime to release unconditionally all persons imprisoned, interned or subjected to other restrictions for their opposition to apartheid. In 1976, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of this Day.
Addressing the gathering is Walter Sisulu (extreme right), Deputy President of the African National Congress (ANC). From left to right are: Ambassador Ibrahim A. Gambari (Nigeria), Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid; Vasiliy S. Safronchuk, Under-Secretary-General, Department of Political and Security Council Affairs; Mayor David Dinkins of New York City; and Walter Sisulu, Deputy President of the African National Congress (ANC).
