United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED)

United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali opened the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) – or Earth Summit – on 3 June 1992, and Fernando Collor de Mello, President of Brazil, was elected as President of the Conference. The Conference, by means of a resolution proposed by Brazil, adopted and recommended for endorsement by the General Assembly at its next regular session: the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development; a programme of action entitled "Agenda 21"; and a "Statement of Principles on the Management, Conservation and Sustainable Development of All Types of Forests".
