United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali opened the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) - or Earth Summit - on 3 June 1992, and Fernando Collor de Mello, President of Brazil was elected President of the Conference. Maurice Strong, of Canada, was Secretary-General of UNCED.
Gro Harlem Brundtland, Prime Minister of Norway and Chairman of the World Commission on Environment and Development, addresses the Conference.
