UN General Assembly's Thirty-Sixth Regular Session

The UN General Assembly opened its thirty-sixth regular session on 15 September, electing as President Ismat T. Kittani, Iraq's Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Global issues such as disarmament and the North-South dialogue between rich and poor countries, as well as crisis areas such as the Middle East, Cyprus, Afghanistan, Kampuchea and southern Africa figure in the record 134-item agenda. Two new members – Vanuatu (formerly the New Hebrides) and Belize (formerly British Honduras) were admitted early in the session, which is due to end 15 December.
