Secretary-General Plants a "Tree for Peace" on World Environment Day

On 5 June, World Environment Day, political and religious leaders from all the major regions of the world participated in a ""global ceremony"" to commemorate the International Year of Peace (1986). The ceremony was initiated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar planting a ""tree for peace"" on the north lawn of the United Nations. The tree was donated by the Government of Costa Rica.
