Increasing Agricultural Productivity in the Bolivian Altiplano

In order to raise the low agricultural production of the Bolivian Altiplano - a densely populated region of valleys and ridges between the eastern and western Cordilleras - the Government has requested assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). A grass-roots agricultural improvement programme, centred around a selected group of farmers in a priority area, is being implemented, involving the dissemination of improved seeds and more suitable livestock breeds; the development of irrigation; and the establishment of producer, marketing and credit organizations.
Rural workers, or campesinos, and G. Limpias (Bolivia), the local administrative secretary of the programme, look over the plans for new stables at Achica Bajo, an area not far from La Paz, where part of the agricultural improvement programme is concentrated. [Exact date unknown]
