Increasing Agricultural Productivity in the Bolivian Altiplano
In order to raise the low agricultural production of the Bolivian Altiplano - a densely populated region of valleys and ridges between the eastern and western Cordilleras - the Government has requested assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). A grass-roots agricultural improvement programme, centred around a selected group of farmers in a priority area, is being implemented, involving the dissemination of improved seeds and more suitable livestock breeds; the development of irrigation; and the establishment of producer, marketing and credit organizations.
Farmland at Achica Bajo, in the northern Altiplano, near Lake Titicaca. The agricultural improvement programme is concentrated in this area because the soils are good, there appear to be reasonable quantities of water, and an estimated 80,000 families live there. [Exact date unknown]
