General Assembly Holds Special Session on Disarmament

The General Assembly opened on 23 May the first special session it has ever held devoted to disarmament. Lazar Mojsov, Vice-Minister of External Relations of Yugoslavia and President of the 1977 regular session of the Assembly, was elected President of the tenth special session. Consideration of a programme of action for disarmament will be among the tasks of the special session which is scheduled to conclude on 28 June. The special session was called for in 1976 by the Assembly (resolution 31/189 B of 21 December 1976, adopted without a vote) which reaffirmed that disarmament is one of the essential objectives of the UN, and noted the conviction that ""peace can be secured through the implementation of disarmament measures, particularly of nuclear disarmament, conducive to the realization of the final objective, namely, general and complete disarmament under effective international control"".
