"Music for UNICEF" Concert Launches International Year of Child

To mark the start of the International Year of the Child "A Gift of Song - Music for UNICEF" concert was held in the General Assembly hall on 9 January. The 90 minute special, hosted by television personality David Frost, brought together a number of well-known popular recording artists: ABBA, the Bee Gees, Rita Coolidge, John Denver, Earth Wind and Fire, Andy Gibb, Elton John, Kris Kristofferson, Olivia Newton-John, Rod Stewart and Donna Summer. Each of them performed an original composition and donated its rights in perpetuity to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The concert was attended by Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, UNICEF Executive Director Henry Labouisse and other senior UN officials and diplomats.
