Three New Witnesses Heard as Namibia Uranium Hearings Conclude

The Council for Namibia's Panel for Hearings on Namibian Uranium, which met this week to gather information on the exploitation, purchase and use of Namibian uranium, concluded its work this afternoon. Statements were heard by Dr. Helen Caldicott, pediatrician, Harvard Medical School instructor, and President of Physicians for Social Responsibility; Abdul Minty, Director, World Campaign against Military and Nuclear Collaboration with South Africa; and Barbara Masekela, a representative of the African National Congress of South Africa (ANC). A number of other participants were also heard from including representatives of India, Zambia, the Soviet Union, China, Yugoslavia and the observer from the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). Various witnesses who had previously given testimony also participated in the discussions. In a concluding statement, Panel Chairman Noel G. Sinclair (Guyana) said disclosures made during the week had helped fortify the Council for Namibia's position on illegal exploitation of Namibia's uranium. The Panel, after careful assessment, should approach the Governments and companies concerned on the basis of evidence which is now possessed.
