General Assembly Admits Two German States and the Bahamas to United Nations Membership

The General Assembly opened its twenty-eighth regular session this afternoon and raised the membership of the United Nations to 135 by admitting the German Democratic Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. As its new President, the Assembly elected Leopoldo Benites of Ecuador, his country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who had attended 18 sessions of the Assembly.
