Headquarters of the United Nations
The Headquarters of the United Nations Organization in New York occupies an eighteen acre, six-block tract on Manhattan Island which extends from 42nd to 48th Streets between First Avenue and the East River. The complex consists of the 39-story Secretariat, the General Assembly, Council Chambers and Conference Rooms located at the river's edge, and the Dag Hammarskjöld Library. More than three-fourths of the site is devoted to landscaped gardens, lawns and walks planted with an exceptional variety of trees, shrubs and flowers.
The crew of maintenance workers shown here cleaning the Delegates Lounge are part of the corps of night workers who take care of the twenty acres of office space in the Secretariat building plus the vast area of carpeting which spans the General Assembly and the Conference buildings. [1969]
