Security Council Unanimously Agrees to Recommend Membership of Maldive Islands, Singapore to United Nations

The Security Council voted unanimously this afternoon to recommend to the General Assembly the admission of the Maldive Islands and Singapore to the United Nations. The Council acted by adopting two draft resolutions – one submitted jointly by Jordan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom, relating to the Maldives Islands, and the other submitted jointly by the Ivory Coast, Jordan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom, relating to Singapore. Earlier this year, the Council voted unanimously on 15 March to recommend to the Assembly the admission of The Gambia. Admission of these three States would bring the membership of the United Nations to 117.
