Security Council Calls for Withdrawal of Diplomatic Missions from Jerusalem; Terms Null and Void Israel's "Basic Law" Making Jerusalem Its Capital

The Security Council, acting this afternoon by a vote of 14 in favour to none against, with 1 abstention (United States), called on those States with diplomatic missions in Jerusalem to withdraw them. The resolution became Security Council resolution 478 (1980). In its action today, the Council also "censures in the strongest terms the enactment by Israel of the 'basic law' on Jerusalem and the refusal to comply with relevant Security Council resolutions". It decided not to recognize the law and Israeli actions resulting from it which seek to alter the character and status of Jerusalem and called on all UN Members to accept that decision.
