UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)

The United Nations Peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was established by action of the UN Security Council to help prevent a recurrence of hostilities in the Republic of Cyprus. The Force will be stationed in various sectors of the country and, under the terms of the Security Council resolution, will remain in the island for a period of three months. To date the force is composed of contingents from Canada, Demark, Finland, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom, and civilian police from Austria and Sweden.

A Canadian UNFICYP soldier (foreground) patrols the Apios Elias Monastery, formerly a Turkish Cypriot observation near St. Hilarion Castle in the Kyrenia Mountains. In the background Greek Cypriots.
