Federal Higher Teacher Training College in Nigeria
To meet the shortage of qualified secondary school teachers, the Government, assisted by the United Nations Special Fund and its Executing Agency, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), established a co-educational, residential College to provide a three-year post-secondary teacher-training programme. The College, in Yaba, near Lagos, opened in November, 1962. With 160 places for students in its first year, the College received more than 1,600 applications.
