UNKRA Aid to South Korea
In the war-shattered Republic of Korea there is a great need for large-scale aid from outside. There are still great shortages of food and clothing. At least 1,000,000 new homes are needed, about one out of every four South Korean having to live in makeshift shelters. The United Nations has set up the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), financed from voluntary contributions by governments, to help in the basic rebuilding of the country. What this Agency does is initiated by requests from the Government of the Republic of Korea with which it works closely.
This photograph shows a Korean-manned tractor-hoist stacking lumber at the port of Pusan. The lumber is part of that imported by UNKRA under the foreign aid programme and will be used for housing and school-room construction. [No exact date]
